4th Grade E-slot Electives

Art From the Heart is a nine week 4th grade E-slot elective art project dedicated to creating art. The art created by the E-slot elective will be delivered to elderly and/or sick people. The hope is that the art created by our students will be inspiring and bring a smile to the faces of those who don't always have the most attention and/or who just might like a healthy dose of color in their life.

This week they were visited by local artist / graphic artist and business owner Gilbert Sauceda (his company website is: http://colorfactoryllc.com/) who shared his experiences and some of his work with the students.

Mr. Sauceda is dyslexic and color blind (quite a mountain to climb for a professional artist!) who knew he wanted to "color for a living" since he was six years old. Unfortunately, school was not easy for him and it took him until college to really start to pursue his dreams. Today, he owns a successful graphic art and marketing business and has written/illustrated two children's books.

The central themes in Mr. Sauceda's art center on things he loves like Texas sports teams, old cars and musicians. After delivering an exceptional lesson on how to draw a face, Mr. Sauceda had the students line up and gave them an incredible gift: signed prints of his work!

Another E-slot elective is 4th grade is Fuel Up To Play 60 which is sponsored by the NFL and the National Dairy Council.  It is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program helping make wellness part of the game plan in more than 70,000 schools across the country.

At Laurel Mountain, we have nineteen 4th grade students serving as student ambassadors.  They meet during the E-slot time on Fridays.  Below is a picture of this group.
